Cultivate climate smart - make your own fertilizer water

Soil and fertilizer

Fertilizer water can be a pure miracle cure for tired vegetables and flowers, as it provides a quick replenishment of important nutrients. In this article, we tell you more about some of the most common types, and how you can easily make fertilizer water yourself.

Every time we harvest, we take nutrients from the soil. It must be restored if we want to continue harvesting. Fertilizing with organic material improves soil fertility and increases nutrient levels in a gentle way. Liquid fertilizer is a supplement to basic fertilization. It does not increase the humus content, but provides an extra dose of substances that plants quickly use up, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. The most common way is to make liquid fertilizer from something nitrogen-rich, such as nettles, comfrey, urine, bokashi water, or manure. Whatever you choose, you should water moderately and in damp soil. Liquid fertilizer is especially good in the spring and for tired soil in pots.

Gullvann

Here's how you make your own colloidal gold water

One part urine is mixed with nine parts water. The mixture is watered next to the plants. If the plant is something you are going to eat, then you should stop watering a couple of weeks before harvesting. It is not recommended to make golden water if the urine may contain traces of medications. At the end of summer, you should stop fertilizing completely so the perennials have time to rest before winter. If you continue, they risk freezing when the frost comes. Golden water also works well in the compost, as it increases the nitrogen content and the activity of microorganisms. Vulurt is one of several plants you can use to make your own fertilizer water.

Plant Fertilizer Tea

You can also make your own fertilizer water using plants - easily and for free.

Nettle Tea

Nettle water can be made from both fresh and dried nettles. It provides a good amount of nitrogen, but is also rich in phosphorus and potassium, which plants need a lot of. It also contains other substances like iron, calcium, and auxin, a type of hormone that promotes plant growth.

Here's how to make nettle water:

Collect about a kilogram of nettles and pour 10 liters of water over them so that they are covered. Let it steep for a few weeks.
Occasionally, it's a good idea to stir to promote oxygenation.
The color of the solution should be tea-colored. If it looks darker, you should dilute the solution with water.,

Comfrey

Comfrey tea as fertiliser has been somewhat controversial. It is rich in potassium, which plants like tomatoes enjoy, but also contains toxins (so-called pyrrolizidine alkaloids) that can be absorbed by the plants. It is still often used in crops, especially in the USA and England. Since comfrey has deep roots, it efficiently absorbs nutrients from deeper soil layers. The plant contains potassium, calcium, iron, selenium, phosphorus, zinc, manganese, magnesium, and of course nitrogen.

How to make comfrey tea:

Fertiliser tea is made from about a kilo of plants and 15 liters of water following the same principle as nettle tea.

Fertilizer water from animal manure

If you want to make liquid manure from animal manure, the color should also remind you of weak tea. When using chicken manure, use very small amounts. Let the mixture sit for a few days before use. The solution lasts for two to three weeks if you stir it occasionally.

Extra tips from the expert

If you add some rock flour to the fertilized water, you also add important minerals. You can make fertilized water that contains more than one plant. That way, you get a wide range of different nutrients.
